Edward Gorey was an illustrator with a fondness for cats, and the Victorian and Edwardian period. His artwork proved him to be a master of the amusing, the strange, and the unexpected. He was also a writer, a Harvard graduate, and a respected book designer. Cat Fancy first appeared on The New Yorker magazine cover in 2018, eighteen years after Gorey's passing.
One can only imagine what’s happening in Cat Fancy. Is a cat outside looking in the window at the pampered feline? Is the kitty on the bed seeing itself in a mirror? The subtlety of the main subject is refreshing, and very cat-like as it is often hard to see the cat in the room. Gorey's intricate cross-hatched drawing makes this 1000-piece jigsaw puzzle a head-scratcher!
